19 | Schupner, Kathleen | 448 | BROKEN HOME: NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg is also a quilter, and was on space shuttle missions in 2008 and 2013. When at the International Space Station, her favorite place was the viewing cupola, where she could gaze at our earth from space. Since then, Karen has designed a line of fabrics that reflect the geography of our earth in various forms: polar ice, water, forests, deserts, cloud formations...etc. This wallhanging is a portrait of our earth ("the blue marble" updated) as it is being changed by human activity. Thus the continents are recognizable but somewhat disfigured. There are chunks of the earth breaking off into the universe. Our atmospheric layers are distorted. Thus the theme of our "broken home." This wall-hanging was designed by me, pieced by my hand (EPP technique) and machine quilted by me on my domestic machine (Juki TL18QVP). | 1st | ||||
